    Tilers in the APY Lands

The APY Lands cover a large area of arid country in the far north-west of South Australia, bordering the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The land is owned and managed by Anangu, and entry requires a permit. Communities such as Amata, Pukatja (Ernabella), Mimili and Indulkana (Iwantja) sit among red sand plains and ranges, more than 1,000 kilometres by road from Adelaide. Buildings are mostly single-storey community housing, plus staff accommodation, schools, health clinics, community stores and art centres. Work here is planned around distance, heat and road conditions.

    Tiling in the APY Lands

SA Tiling Pro is based in Adelaide and services all of South Australia, including the APY Lands. We arrange travel and accommodation, bring every tile, adhesive, membrane and tool with us, and allow time for entry permits and road conditions. Typical jobs include bathroom and laundry tiling in community housing, waterproofing, floor tiling in schools, clinics and stores, and repairs or regrouting in existing homes. Quotes are free with no obligation. We are fully licensed and insured, with over 20 years of tiling experience.

Housing is almost entirely single-storey community housing, much of it built or upgraded under state and national remote Indigenous housing programs since the late 2000s, along with staff accommodation for teachers, health workers and community staff. There are no large private estates or heritage-era homes; the built environment is public housing, schools, clinics, stores and art centres.

    Local tiling considerations

    • Extreme heat and thermal movement

Summer temperatures regularly pass 40 degrees and winter nights drop close to freezing, so tiles and substrates move more than they do in Adelaide. We use flexible adhesives and place movement joints in line with AS 3958.1, particularly on external and sun-exposed floors.

    • Everything comes in by road

There is no tile supplier in the APY Lands, and the access roads west of the Stuart Highway are unsealed and can close after rain. We bring all materials, spares and tools from Adelaide and order extra tiles so a breakage in transit does not stall the job.

    • Hard-wearing wet areas

Community housing and staff accommodation see heavy use, so bathrooms and laundries need waterproofing to AS 3740, sound screeds and a grout that stands up to frequent cleaning. Simple layouts with fewer joints and fittings are easier to maintain in a remote setting.

    • Slip resistance in public buildings

Clinics, schools and stores need floor tiles with a slip rating suited to each area, as classified under AS 4586. Red dust and sand tracked in from outside make a textured but cleanable surface the practical choice at entries and in wet areas.

    Common projects here

    • • Bathroom and laundry upgrades in community housing
    • • Waterproofing and wet area tiling for new remote housing
    • • Ensuite and bathroom tiling in staff accommodation for schools and clinics
    • • Slip-rated floor tiling in health clinics and community stores
    • • Floor tiling in art centres and community buildings
    • • Tile repairs and regrouting in existing homes
    Services

Tiling services available in the APY Lands

Do you actually travel to the APY Lands?
Yes. SA Tiling Pro services all of South Australia, including the APY Lands, and we arrange the travel and accommodation ourselves. We allow for the entry permit process and the unsealed road access west of the Stuart Highway, and plan each trip so the job is finished in one visit wherever possible.
How far ahead do I need to book a job in Amata, Pukatja or Mimili?
Remote jobs need more lead time than city work because of permits, freight and travel. Call us Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, or send plans, measurements and photos as early as you can, and we will prepare a free quote before anyone travels. Where several jobs are in the same community we can group them into one trip.
What tiles and products suit the conditions out here?
Heat, dust and heavy use call for hard-wearing porcelain or vitrified tiles, flexible adhesives and a grout that is easy to clean. Wet areas are waterproofed to AS 3740 and external areas to AS 4654, with movement joints placed to suit the wide temperature swings. For clinics, schools and stores we select floor tiles with a slip rating classified under AS 4586.
Do you charge extra for travel?
For metropolitan Adelaide, no. For regional and remote work we factor travel into the written quote up front so there are no surprises, and we group regional jobs where we can to keep costs down.
Can you quote from photos and measurements?
For straightforward jobs, yes. Send photos and rough measurements with the quote form and we will give you an indicative price, then confirm it on site before work starts.
