    Tiling on Kangaroo Island

    Local tiling considerations

    • Salt air on exposed coasts

      Homes on the island's coastline cop salt-laden wind, particularly on the south and west coasts facing the Southern Ocean. Outdoor areas need frost-resistant tiles, exterior-grade adhesives and grouts, and balconies over living areas are waterproofed to AS 4654.

    • Bushfire rebuilds and new construction

      Much of the island is bushfire-prone and many homes have been rebuilt since the 2019-20 fires. Wet areas in these new builds are waterproofed to AS 3740 and floors are set out to suit the new slab or sheet flooring, with movement joints placed as AS 3958.1 recommends.

    • Slip ratings for wet feet

      Holiday houses and accommodation see sandy, wet feet coming in from the beach. Pool surrounds, outdoor showers, verandahs and entries should use tiles with an appropriate AS 4586 slip rating rather than a polished finish.

    • Rainwater tanks and bore supply

      Many island properties run on rainwater tanks or bores rather than mains water. Water quality affects grout staining and mineral build-up over time, so we recommend sealed grouts in wet areas and a cleaning routine suited to the local supply.

    Do you actually travel to Kangaroo Island for tiling work?

    How far ahead should I book an island job?
    Earlier than a metro job. We plan island trips in blocks so the crossing is worthwhile, and vehicle bookings on the ferry fill up over summer and holiday periods. Get in touch as soon as you have plans or a rough scope and we can quote and pencil in dates.
    What tiles suit a coastal home on the island?
    For outdoor areas and exposed entries, use frost-resistant porcelain or stone with a suitable AS 4586 slip rating, laid with exterior-grade adhesive. Inside, salt air is less of a concern, but wet areas still need waterproofing to AS 3740 and sealed grout to cope with tank or bore water. We can advise on tile selection when we quote.
    Do you charge extra for travel?
    For metropolitan Adelaide, no. For regional and remote work we factor travel into the written quote up front so there are no surprises, and we group regional jobs where we can to keep costs down.
